Flameproof Containment (Ex d)

Unlike increased safety (Ex e) structures, SIMO Ex d motors (YBX3, YBX4, YBX5) are engineered with heavy-duty cast iron frames (FC250/FCD450) designed to contain an internal explosion of gas or vapor mixtures without rupturing, preventing the transition of fire to the outer explosive environment.

Our CNC machining ensures strict flamepath clearance (spigoted, cylindrical, and threaded joints) conforming to IEC 60079-1 standards. These microscopic escape routes cool the escaping gas expansion down below the ignition temperature threshold of ambient gases before exiting.

Procurement Framework for Global Engineering Procurement (EPC)

1. Material Specification Review

Ensure the manufacturer uses high-strength structural grade gray cast iron or ductile cast iron for frames (minimum HT250/FCD450). Terminal boxes must be separately certified and robustly sealed using high-performance fluororubber or silicone gaskets to maintain IP66 rating.

2. Winding Insulation Class

For chemical and heavy duty applications, specify Class F insulation with a Class B temperature rise limit (80K). The addition of dual Pt100 RTDs in stator winding slots and bearing housings ensures continuous telemetry feedback to DCS systems.

3. Shaft & Bearing Engineering

What is the core difference between Ex d (Flameproof) and Ex e (Increased Safety) motors? +
Ex d (Flameproof) motors are designed to contain an internal explosion of an explosive gas mixture. They have robust, pressure-resistant enclosures and machined flamepaths that cool escaping combustion gases. Ex e (Increased Safety) motors prevent occurrences of sparks, arcs, or high surface temperatures during normal operation and do not contain explosions internally.
How does ambient temperature affect the performance of Ex d motors? +
Standard Ex d motors are rated for -20°C to +40°C. For extreme climates, SIMO customizes designs for temperatures ranging from -50°C (using specialized low-temperature steels and heaters) up to +60°C. High temperatures require de-rating the motor to prevent the surface temperature from exceeding the rated gas group limit (e.g., T4 at 135°C).
Why is VFD (Variable Frequency Drive) operation critical for Ex d motors, and what precautions must be taken? +
Using VFDs allows for variable speed control of pumps and fans, reducing power consumption. However, running motors at lower speeds reduces cooling fan performance. Therefore, SIMO motors utilize thermal protection RTDs or separate auxiliary cooling blowers (IC416 cooling type) to prevent excessive heat buildup.
Can a motor rated for Gas Group IIB be used in a Group IIC environment? +
No. Group IIC environments contain volatile gases like Hydrogen and Acetylene, which require tighter flamepath tolerances and smaller clearances than Group IIB gases. A Group IIC certified motor can be used in Group IIB or IIA applications, but a IIB motor cannot be used in a IIC hazard zone.
How does SIMO ensure the reliability of large-scale high-voltage induction motors? +
Our high-voltage lines (6kV and 10kV) undergo dynamic balancing, insulation surge tests, and full load temperature tests. Stators are insulated using vacuum pressure impregnation (VPI) with solventless epoxy resin, ensuring void-free moisture resistance and mechanical stability under high electrical stresses.
