Unlike squirrel-cage motors, wound rotor slip ring motors incorporate a 3-phase insulated winding connected to slip rings. This enables the introduction of external resistance, giving absolute control over starting torque and inrush current characteristics.
Class F and Class H Vacuum Pressure Impregnation (VPI) is applied to all windings. This prevents micro-vibrations, guards against heavy dust environments, and delivers thermal resistance suitable for continuous high-temperature industrial settings.

Operating heavy machinery under severe load conditions demands custom starting characteristics. Standard squirrel-cage motors suffer from high starting inrush current (up to 600-700% of nominal current), which causes severe voltage drops in the power grid. SIMO Slip Ring Motors solve this. Slip ring motors are selected for applications requiring very high starting torque under full load (e.g., ball mills, crushers) and where the electrical grid capacity is limited. By inserting external resistance in series with the rotor winding through the slip rings, the motor can generate maximum torque at starting speed while drawing significantly less starting current.
Due to sliding electrical contact, slip ring assemblies require periodic inspection. This includes monitoring carbon brush wear, maintaining correct spring tension on brush holders, removing carbon dust from the housing, and checking for ring eccentricities or pitting. SIMO's high-tech brush holders minimize these maintenance intervals significantly.
YRKS (water-to-air cooling) motors transfer heat through an internal water heat exchanger, allowing the motor to be more compact, silent, and independent of ambient air quality. YRKK (air-to-air cooling) utilizes dual-path ventilation pipes which are exceptionally robust, simple, and optimal for outdoor locations with available wind flow, eliminating the need for cooling water piping.
