Q1: What is the primary difference between a flameproof (Ex d) motor and a dust explosion-proof (Ex t) motor?
Flameproof (Ex d) motors are designed to operate in areas where flammable gases are present (such as Zone 1 or Zone 2). The enclosure is built to withstand an internal explosion without cracking, and the joints are designed to cool escaping gas below the ignition temperature of the surrounding atmosphere. Dust explosion-proof (Ex t) motors, on the other hand, prevent combustible dust (such as coal, wood dust, or flour) from entering the enclosure at all, utilizing tightly sealed joints and high IP (IP65 or IP66) protection ratings.
Q2: How do temperature classes (T1 to T6) affect motor safety in hazardous environments?
Temperature classes define the maximum external surface temperature that the motor can reach under any operating condition (including startup or overload). For example, a T4-rated motor will not exceed 135°C on its external surfaces, making it safe for gases with ignition points above 135°C (like Ethylene). A T6 motor cannot exceed 85°C. Selecting the correct temperature class is critical: if a motor's surface temperature exceeds the auto-ignition point of the surrounding gases, a catastrophic explosion could occur.
Q3: Can low voltage Ex motors be used with variable frequency drives (VFDs)?
Yes, but they must be specifically rated for VFD duty (such as our YBBP series).
